Kisho Kurokawa’s “Capsule Hotel” was designed in the early 70’s to be a place for harried Japanese businessmen to crash during the work-week. Each “capsule” is a modified shipping container that provides sleeping and bathing facilities for one person. The capsules are attached with four high-tension bolts and were designed to be replaced individually for easy maintenance.
Unfortunately the hotel is now facing destruction, and the United Nations refuses to list it as an International Landmark. This is also not the first time I’ve heard of housing being made from old shipping containers.
But really… who could resist a hotel room with a built-in reel-to-reel tape deck?!
